Recycling in Units including Organics
Letters will go out in November explaining the program, schedule and container choices for first year distribution (at a rate of 23 buildings per day). Hard containers work better with chutes. No replacements planned during first year, when resident moves out and don’t leave container behind, only in year 2 & 3.

Durable goods, Pilot Re-use center (no retail outlet) facility is operational, building, equipment and staff are in place:

Four (4) loads per day are processed working with Plastic Lawn Furniture manufacturers, carpet recycling, scrap metal and second hand stores like Goodwill & Salvation Army but no clothe, as clothing bins are wide spread throughout the city.

Pile conversion of some 2600 locations is half done, will be completed by end of year Waste pickup, they are working at converting tote users to front end pickup, The contamination of recycling is a problem, upon audit of load, they will backtrack the route find & deal with culprit.

Storage of waste on private property is a "Property Standard" issue, so if there is illegal dumping on private property, calling the “waste enforcement hotline at 416-392-0873” for bylaw enforcement or emailing MLSwaste@toronto.ca (Municipal Licensing and Standard) will not result in their clean up or investigation but if you have proof (Identity of person committing the offense) they will charge the culprit.

The new "Utility" will send out bills at the end of September covering July 1 to August 31=(61 days)
The bill will contain lift data i.e. cubic yards (as measures when site was visited) and # of units in bldg.

The calculator implies 4 weeks per month, so check first bill carefully, also when changing the
quantity of bins per month using the calculator, note that in the “medium” category the
monthly amount will not change but it will if in the “Large +" category.

Watch out in newspapers September 26, 2008 when public notices will appear for water and waste
rate increases that will be presented at Council November 6 & 7, 2008. Rates are likely to increase 3½% in 2009. There is no contact person available to get collection or billing information prior to receiving the "Utility” bill in the mail.

Next meeting November 18, 2008

Bob Girard
